job summary

The Project Coordinator will support the Aging and Population Health Lab and the Active Aging Research Team with activities related to a community-based health promotion program for older adults that emphasizes mobility, physical activity, and social connectedness. The Aging and Population Health Lab at SFU is led by Dr. Dawn Mackey, and the Active Aging Research Team at UBC is co-led by Drs. Heather McKay and Joanie Sims-Gould.

Project coordination is required for adaptation and scale-up of Choose to Move, funded via Implementation Science Team in Healthy Aging grants. Choose to Move is a health promoting intervention that supports older adults to become more physically active, mobile, and socially connected. The successful candidate will play a key role in the adaptation of Choose to Move to better reach and engage older men. Applicants with demonstrated experience in men’s health promotion and/or community development will be given preference. job responsibilities

  • Coordinate all aspects of adapting, implementing, and evaluating Choose to Move for older men, including building and maintaining relationships with community and referral organizations, providing program delivery support, and executing the implementation evaluation and health impact evaluation plans and related work

  • Participate in positive relationship-building with community-based organizations that serve older men in the Lower Mainland and across British Columbia; support these organizations as they adapt and deliver Choose to Move to older men

  • Coordinate and support project operations, including creating adapted program and promotional materials; supporting community outreach; preparing, scheduling, running and attending meetings; documenting and distributing meeting notes/minutes; filing, scanning, and organizing project files; and coordinating timelines

  • Coordinate and support research operations, including collecting quantitative and qualitative data (on and off site), entering data, and performing quality assurance checks on data; assist in analyzing and interpreting preliminary research data by performing tasks such assembly, compilation, and summary of statistical data and coding interview data

  • Liaise with SFU and UBC research supports (e.g., accounting, research services, ethics, SFU Dept of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology, UBC Faculty of Medicine) to address project needs

  • Support communications for Choose to Move, including knowledge mobilization products, including social media posts, website content, research briefs and participant and organization reports

  • Other responsibilities may include event planning and giving presentations, general research administration, and other related tasks

Supervision Received & Given

The successful candidate will report to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Dawn Mackey) of the Aging and Population Health Lab (APHL) and the Active Aging Research Team (AART) Senior Manager, Programs and Evaluation. The Project Coordinator will interact with APHL members, AART leads and staff, staff at the Centre for Aging-SMART, SFU, and UBC, and other research and community partners.

The successful candidate may provide day-to-day supervision to research assistants.

Minimum Qualifications (Requirements)

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., public health, kinesiology, gender studies, health psychology, health science, gerontology, recreation management, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (both oral and written), and presentation skills

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, accuracy, attention to detail

  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively, maintain an overview of various ongoing projects/tasks, and ensure timely completion of assignments

  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict management skills

  • Ability to exercise good will, tact, discretion, and initiative as well as mature judgement and decision making

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

Preferred Qualifications (Assets)

  • Experience leading health promotion or physical activity/fitness programs

  • Experience interacting with men in the Lower Mainland, ideally older men

  • Experience interacting with organizations in the Lower Mainland that provide service, social and/or recreational services, ideally to older men

  • Interest and experience in community-engaged research

  • Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, including data collection

  • Computer experience, including experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data analysis software (SPSS/Stata; NVivo)

  • Training in gender competency, specifically for health service or program delivery to men

  • Knowledge of and/or lived experience in men’s health promotion

  • Master’s degree in related field
